Though relatively new to the Upper West Side, Artie's has quickly become a local institution with traditional Jewish-style deli cuisine and a large, cheerful, retro-ish space. Here's where to go for authoritative and generously padded pastrami, brisket, and combo sandwiches. They're so large that you might be tempted to have half the meat wrapped up to take home. Stuffed cabbage, meat-loaf, and potato pancakes are among the many comfort foods offered. And the hot dogs, in natural casings, happen to be excellent—though you have to order two at a time, so make sure you ar-rive with either a hot-dog-loving friend or an excellent appetite. Wash it all down with Dr. Brown's celery soda—there’s also a diet version for calorie counters. The counter near the door is full of tempting fridge fare and fancy cookies.
