Cash onlyNo place in New York City serves better smoked salmon—or more varieties of it—than Barney Greengrass. We prefer the salty lox but sometimes explore the more subtle flavors of the Nova Scotia salmon. Sturgeon is another noted specialty. The best way to experience the Barney Greengrass approach to smoked fish is to order the reasonably priced "appetizer," which is a meal in itself, and comes with a bagel or bialy (sort of a flat bagel with a depression instead of a hole) from H&H—another revered neighborhood institution—and a thick wad of cream cheese. If you’re really ravenous go for the "platter" with two bagels or bialys, potato salad or slaw, various garnishes, and cream cheese. That the decor is seemingly unchanged since the 1950s only adds to Barney's allure. The locals love it, so come early to beat the crowds, especially on weekend mornings.
