Visa, MC, AmEx, DiscoverNestled away in a quiet corner of Chelsea is a place where you can buy the best cake in New York. Apple crumble pie is generously freighted with fresh fruit. There are coconut cream, banana cream, and peanut butter chocolate chip pies; cookies, cheesecakes, perfect little cupcakes, chocolate brownies, and Hello Dolly bars (coconut, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, graham crumb). But the cakes are what capture the imagination: rich but not hard, moist but not mushy. First choice is two-layer banana cake with cream cheese frosting. The icebox cake is nine thin layers of chocolate wafers interlaid with whipped cream. For something less cloying, try the pineapple upside-down cake. Two formica tables date from the '50s—the red one’s just like the table on which our mom served up our first post-Gerber meals.
