While not the most celebrated bagel joint on the Upper West Side, Broadway Bagels happens to be the one we prefer. There is invariably a line—a testament to the excellence of the product—but it is never tryingly long. Efficient service keeps it moving at a rapid clip. Broadway's bagel is a generous size with a firm exterior and a tender bready interior. It makes a sure foundation for any sandwich. But it's not the only thing that keeps us coming back. Broadway's secret weapon is its affordable omelet selection. The one we always have is the spinach omelet with feta cheese served with browned home fries with just the right touch of onion. Add a cup of black tea and a poppyseed bagel and you've got our favorite breakfast. Quite affordable, too. The place has received a modest cosmetic renovation in recent years but retains its raffish and comfortable informality.
