Fish & chips are better here than in Manhattan's frenetic mock-pubs. Fried cod or haddock comes in thick golden batter with chips that are like real potatoes. Hate grease? Have your fish baked in white wine. Steak & kidney pie is small but dense—we could taste the kidney—better than the watery pies in stingy London pubs. For dessert, have spotted dick (a raisin cake, not a disease) or apple/blackberry crumble in warm vanilla sauce. On tap are Newcastle Brown, Boddington's (Manchester), and Old Speckled Hen (Suffolk). Ales are served chilled (sacrilege!). For multiculti variety there's also the interconnected CurryShop.
