We had been buying groceries at Fairway for years before discovering the tall and handsomely utilitarian second-floor café. The sandwiches, including dill-egg salad on seven-grain bread, are lovely. Fish & chips are thickly battered like the real (English) thing. The Mediterranean Vegetable Plate comes with salmon, chicken, or grilled tuna plus four items from a vegetable selection too long to list (don't miss the grilled carrots and steamed asparagus). You can get a pot of Jamaican Blue Mountain, the world's most rarefied and expensive coffee. And while the dessert picks are tempting, we can't resist the Café Viennoise: coffee with two scoops of vanilla ice cream. Check out the world-famous cheese counter downstairs. After 5:30 PM the café metamorphoses into a steakhouse with a $40 prix fixe menu.
