If you don’t like sausage, you're probably thinking of American supermarket sausage, which is gristly and loaded with a carcinogenic preservative. But Hallo Berlin serves its own made-on-premises version of the good German stuff—a plateful of this leaves you feeling satisfied, not sick. The whimsically named Dr. Atkins Diet Plate includes veal, pork, and beef wurst with sauerkraut, sweet red cabbage, sauteed onion, pickles, and two kinds of mustard. Goulash soup, a Hungarian staple that migrated to Germany, is mild and full of beef (or chicken) chunks and noodles. The beer selection on tap varies; try the pale cloudy aromatic weissbier or one of the bottled rauchbiers—that's smoked beer!
