Visa, MC, AmEx, DiscoverYorkville on the East Side is no longer a German enclave but the Heidelberg carries on the tradition with a notice above the door that says "come as strangers, leave as friends" and lots of Central European comfort food. Breaded schnitzel variations include veal and pork, with home fries that have a rich sauteed-onion flavor. Sauerbraten is mouth-melting marinated beef with a dumpling. Too heavy? Have sole or spinach crepes. Most entrees come with sweet red cabbage. The beers benefit from Germany's ancient purity laws, outlawed by the EU but still observed in spirit. White wines (especially the medium-sweet Rieslings) are reliable. Desserts include Black Forest chocolate cake and strudel—don't miss the warm raspberries served over vanilla ice cream.
