Does the Hungarian Pastry Shop exist in a time warp? It's always been jammed and we could swear the Columbia students hogging the tables are the same ones we saw in the '70s. Top-grade sweets make those tables choice real estate. The cherry strudel, for instance, beats the one we had in Vienna, while the apple turnover is delightfully crunchy at the edges but tender at the fruity center. Carrot cake is fabulous, and just looking at the chocolate-covered hazelnut cream cake is fun. Cookies abound—try the crispy Florentines—and there's espresso and bottomless cups of coffee. While all major food groups (fat, sugar, chocolate) are here, you can also get tasty sandwiches next door at P&W's Sandwich Shop, like eggplant and goat cheese with tampenade (black olive relish).
