The signature fried chickpea balls have crispy exteriors. In sandwiches, they're a quick and economical meal, but if you're hungry, the best way to have them is in the platter with hummus (beaded with olive oil) and a creamy parsley-flecked baba ganoush. However, Mamoun's secret weapons are the pastries. Baklava, with chopped walnuts in a flaky pastry, is the most familiar. Babuseh is a cake with chopped nuts nestled between two layers of thin crunchy semolina. Knafe is a softer cake made with ricotta cheese and butter. But our pick is the mabrune, a small pastry boat loaded with pistachios, almonds, and walnuts. Most of these are impregnated with honey—Mamoun's pastries are the best way we know to get sticky-fingered.
