The Meatpacking District, in the teens and on the Hudson, was once home to some of New York's raunchiest clubs but has evolved (or devolved) into a destination for the trendy. Paradoxically, this Belgian eatery specializes not in meat (though you can get a steak or beef stew here) but steamed mussels. Have 'em fancy (in coconut milk with peppers and thyme, or with cilantro, curry, and cream) or have 'em simple (with veg, in white wine, or in beer). More delicate palates may wish to try the thin-sliced duck breast salad served with celery and apples. Belgian beers are the best in the world and Markt offers some amazing ones on tap. If you prefer a pale ale, try Hoegaarden, which doubles as a sauce for mussels. For something darker try Leffe Bruin, a deep brown ale with a complex and surprising array of flavors.
