At the nexus of Harlem, Morningside Heights, and the Upper West Side, across from the Cathedral of St. John the Unfinished, is this homey place with red and yellow checkerboard linoleum floor. Arrive hungry. On your first trip the logical choice is Miss Mamie's Sampler which may include North Carolina BBQ or Uncle CL's short ribs, fried shrimp or catfish, and chicken, fried or "smothered" (with gravy). Among the many excellent sides are an exceptional potato salad, an equally fine mac & cheese, and collard greens that almost melt in your mouth. All entrees come with cornbread. Sweet potato pie and cobbler are highlights of the star-studded dessert menu. If you’re in a celebratory mood, order champagne!
