Virgil's is a big cheerful place just off Times Square and easily the best large-scale barbecue joint in Manhattan. Ribs are of course a specialty. The delicious Owensboro lamb sandwich, named for Kentucky's BBQ mecca, has slid down our gullet many times. There's also pulled pork, chicken-fried steak, catfish—you get the idea. Portions are generous. Superb sides include corn bread, biscuits and gravy, collard greens, and mashed potatoes. Virgil's has also won our hearts with a second-to-none list of what P.J. O'Rourke once called "the miracle of beer." Use it to explore the world. It was here that we became addicted to the funky Trappist ales of Belgium. And just in case you're worried about the restaurant's Lone Star State credentials, the owner is a Dallas native.
