Zabar's gourmet store is where New Yorkers go to worship food and the cafe next door is a fine place to pick up a sandwich. Though there's a good selection, our hands-down favorite is that New York staple: a bagel stuffed with Nova smoked salmon and cream cheese with a tasty black olive in the middle (even the olive is noteworthy). Yogurt-and-fruit smoothies are to die for. But don't miss the adjacent food store—it's a memorable tourist attraction in itself. Walk in and you're assaulted with cheeses. Move on and you'll come across some of the city's best precooked entrees (including several excellent fish choices). Go farther and the smell of coffee being ground will get you high. The crowds are pretty intense on weekends—yet that's our favorite time to visit Zabar's, in the company of fellow worshippers.
